Wake Up!

Fundamentals, Relationship with God

Ephesians 5:14

“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (NIV84)

Today, right now, the world is in a spiritual slumber—asleep so soundly that it is the sleep of death. “Wake Up!” the Bible shouts, but the world sleeps on. Art, music, films, plays, novels and television are all about surface things, exterior things, superficial things. When does the protagonist pray and wait patiently for the Lord to protect them? When is the song about kindness and gentleness? When is the show truly about the Almighty?

People go about their life fantasizing that if they were alive when Christ walked the earth that they would have followed him, and yet He is right there in the Bible and very few pay him any real mind. Oh, they talk a talk, but follow him? Not at all. They are spiritually asleep—the sleep of death—land of the walking dead—zombies, and they don’t even know it. “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead…

My job, my education, my accomplishments—look at me and what I have, look at me and see what I have done, look at me and mine and be impressed. I am rich and have everything I need and want. I am successful—a winner at the game of life. Look-at-ME. My life is about me and I am the center of my universe.

Pleasure, comfort, warmth, honor, contentment: what else is worth having? Study hard and be good, network, make connections and you will rise to the top.

I am free to be me, is my mantra. Ahh, isn’t freedom wonderful?

Land of the free, home of the brave, we are the best and I am part of the we.

Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

Who’s asleep? I’m master of my own destiny. I am awake and in control of my life.

Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead,…” Your world is coming apart at the seams—it has no captain and is swirling out of control. Wake up and open your eyes and see that it’s caught in the current of the river headed towards the falls. The Death Ship is drifting down the river. Can you not see it? Even if you try? Wake up, O sleeper and look. The Death Ship is drifting into waters that no one wants to go—total war and economic destruction, crime and fear, hopelessness. My friend, please wake up and look down the river. See that the dream is becoming a nightmare.

Life without God at the helm is not possible. It just is not possible. God who can see from the beginning to the end is the only Captain capable of bringing his passengers through. And what does the Captain ask of you? Only that you trust in him, so that you can dine at his table, and the light of Christ can shine on you. Amen.

  1. Frank Kirigiti Says:

We thank God for his word for awakening us from spiritual sleep that we can rise and shine because without Him we can’t do anything and we become enticed with things which are seen and not which are not seen,God worn us previously that whichever we see it good that comes not from him,the end of it is destruction and death. It’s time to wake up.Be blessed.

  2. L Says:

I have noticed over years how much Christianity has evolved into nothing more than a social group of people who are really no different than those of the world. We pretend things are fine on the outside and we medicate our lives in the same manner as those of the world do. We know their songs, their movies and even their TV shows. We know them so well, we find ourselves engaging in meaningless conversations about those things and when the world looks back at us they see nothing different, nothing desirable, but worse, they don’t see Jesus.

How can this be when Jesus is everything we need? How can we trade Him for things that fade and have no meaning in life? We have inside us the Holy Spirit, an unquenchable fire so beautiful yet so powerful! Can you imagine what life would be like if we gave God our whole heart and allowed His Word to truly transform us in the way He intends? Wow! It would be amazing…

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
    2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NIV)

“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:18-20 (NIV)
