The Female Connection

Previously we have seen that signs that are of a female nature represent a human person or agency. Knowing this, let us now look at this Scripture…

Revelation 17:1-5
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. 2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. 5 This title was written on her forehead:


This sign represents one of the central points of the end-times scenario, or should I say the biblical scenario, for things are coming together now for the big finish. It is critical for present day believers to understand exactly who or what this sign represents. The first thing that we can see (easily) is that this sign is represented as a female. Since it is female we know that she represents something made out of humans. Many people are under the false assumption that this “Harlot of Babylon” is some satanic agency, but this cannot be true because it is a woman, and this woman is sitting on the red beast which is a satanic entity. The woman and the Beast are two different things. I don’t want to go into this beast too much right now, but I will say that this seven-headed beast is clearly connected to Satan in other places in the Bible. The woman sitting on the beast means that she is riding it, and is therefore in control of the beast—something that Satan hates. Look at this next Scripture and see that the man-beast and his ten ruler kingdom hate the woman and want to kill her.

Revelation 17:16
The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. (NIV)

Jesus told us in the Gospel of Mark…

Mark 3:23-26
So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. (NIV)

Since the seven-headed beast (Satan’s agency) is working against the great prostitute; it stands to reason that the great prostitute is not of Satan’s doing. Satan hates the great prostitute and therefore she doesn’t belong to him. The great prostitute represents a force that opposes God, true, but is not a satanic entity, and that along with the fact that it is represented as a female, shows us that she represents a human agency. It is important to understand what sort of thing the great prostitute represents because it is easy to become deceived if we don’t know what to look for. To know the truth arms us with the ability to side-step her deceptions. To remain ignorant of her identity is to remain vulnerable to her deceptions.
We see that this woman is sitting upon many waters. Many waters represent peoples and/or nations which we can see in this next passage.

Revelation 17:15
Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages. (NIV)

So, we can know that this is a world-wide system or force. She is NOT exclusive to one nation or people, but, as it says, “…multitudes, nations and languages.” An important point to note is that while this woman deceives the whole world (at least mostly) so does Satan with his beast-man. The peoples of the world are doubly deceived, that is, there are two major deceptions working in the world today, but they are not working together. Each of the two deceptions has their own agendas.

Revelation 12:2 says that the kings of the earth committed adultery with the great prostitute. This obviously is not literal adultery, but rather it is spiritual adultery. In order to understand what spiritual adultery is we must take a look at literal adultery, but not in the obvious sense. An intimate relationship between two people is a relationship of faith. Without faith there can be no intimate relationship between people. A relationship implies faith and trust. To betray faith with your spouse or with a friend is an evil thing.

God is more than God, he is, or at least desires to be, bonded to us humans in a bond of love, faith and hope. A union with God is more accurately represented as a human marriage-like union than in any other representation. Loving God is like loving one’s wife or husband. Being faithful to God is like being faithful to one’s spouse. The relationships are almost identical. To commit spiritual adultery is to be unfaithful to God, that is, to be unfaithful in your relationship with him, by seeking fulfillment with another. When a person is unsatisfied with what God is giving them and so they seek to have their desires met by another, they are committing spiritual adultery.

People today hardly know what being faithful to one’s spouse means or is. They think that marriage, or relationships, are there to give them what they want (or ‘need’.) Human relationships exist for one real purpose. They are there to teach us about a relationship with God. When a person cares more about what they want rather than what God wants for them, then they are in danger of committing spiritual adultery. We are spirit beings that temporarily live inside of animal bodies, and when we let the desires and drives of our animal bodies dictate our actions concerning God, then we are in grave danger of becoming spiritual adulterers.

Philippians 4:12
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (NIV)

1 Timothy 6:6-8
But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. (NIV)

Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (NIV)

Be content lest you become unfaithful.

What the passage in Revelation 17 is saying is that the kings of the earth and the inhabitants of the earth are looking to this human agency or entity for their needs and desires to be met. They are not content with what God has given them. They have become unfaithful to God. They have become spiritual adulterers. This is why she is called the great prostitute; you give her your money and she gives you what your flesh desires, but she does not love you. When you run out of money she’ll drop you like a hot rock.
To see and understand this from God’s perspective you must first understand that God loves you, intensely. He is wise beyond any measure and all powerful. What he gives to you is what you need for your own well being. You may want more, or something else, but God knows what you (you personally) need, so that is what he gives you. Accepting this takes faith in God (this is what real faith is). Trusting God is to be content with what you have knowing that what you have is what your heavenly Father has given you. To be unhappy with your lot in life and seek fulfillment for yourself in the world is to commit spiritual adultery.

In Revelation 12:4 we see that this human agency is adorned with fancy expensive clothes and jewelry. She is rich by every human standard. She promises worldly wealth, but morally she is worse than bankrupt. Worse I say because she never had any of the qualities that made God, God, and they are…

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. (NIV)

The great prostitute has none of these qualities. She is about herself. Those that are about themselves are attracted to what she has to offer. Those that are drawn to the qualities of God seek God. But, many are taken in by the riches that she offers, but also want the qualities of the Spirit of God. If they lose their faith and contentment and seek worldly wealth and praise then they have been deceived by the self-centered prostitute.
